What Is a Reddit Shadowban?
A shadowban is Reddit's oldest and quietest enforcement tool. Your account keeps working normally from your side — you can post, comment, and vote — but nobody else sees any of it. Your posts never appear in feeds, your comments are invisible to other users, and your profile page shows a 404 error to anyone who isn't you.
That silence is the point. Because you get no notification, spammers keep posting into the void instead of creating a new account. The problem: plenty of legitimate marketers, founders, and everyday users get caught by the same filters — and can waste weeks posting content that literally nobody sees.
Shadowban vs. Suspension vs. Subreddit Ban
People mix these up constantly, and the fix is different for each:
- Shadowban — sitewide and silent. Applied by Reddit's spam systems. Your profile 404s for others. Appealable.
- Suspension — sitewide and loud. Reddit tells you, your profile shows "suspended", and it's either temporary or permanent. Appealable through the official form.
- Subreddit ban — local. Moderators of one community banned you there; the rest of Reddit works fine. Handled by messaging the mods, not Reddit.
Our checker detects the first two — the sitewide states that make your account invisible or unusable.
How to Check if You're Shadowbanned
1. Use the checker above
Type the username and we query Reddit directly: a healthy account returns its public profile, a shadowbanned account returns a 404 despite existing, and a suspended account is labeled as such. It takes a few seconds and works for any public account — yours or anyone's.
2. Check while logged out
Open your profile (reddit.com/user/yourname) in a private browser window. If you see "page not found" while logged out but everything looks normal logged in, that's the classic shadowban signature.
3. Post in r/ShadowBan
The subreddit r/ShadowBan runs a bot that replies to your test post with your status. It works, but it's slower and it leaves a public record that you were checking — not ideal if you're managing brand accounts.
What Causes Reddit Shadowbans?
Excessive self-promotion
The most common trigger for marketers. If a large share of your submissions link to the same domain — especially from a young account — the spam filter flags the pattern. Reddit's old guidance was to keep self-promotion under roughly 10% of your activity, and the filters still behave as if that rule is alive.
Vote manipulation done badly
Sudden bursts of votes from fresh, zero-karma accounts are exactly what Reddit's systems are built to catch — and the accounts involved get shadowbanned in batches. This is why vote quality matters more than vote quantity: aged accounts with real history, delivered gradually, don't produce that signature.
Reposting identical content
Cross-posting the same text or link to many subreddits within minutes looks automated, even when a human does it manually.
Ban evasion
Creating a new account to get around a suspension or subreddit ban links the accounts by device and behavior signals — the new account usually inherits a shadowban quickly.
New-account velocity
Brand-new accounts that immediately post links, send DMs, or comment rapidly trip the filters hardest. Accounts need warm-up time — real browsing, subscribing, and light commenting — before doing anything promotional.
How to Fix a Reddit Shadowban
- Confirm it with the checker above — don't appeal a suspension as a shadowban or vice versa.
- Stop the behavior that triggered it. An appeal while the pattern continues gets denied silently.
- Appeal at reddit.com/appeals — keep it short, polite, and honest. Admins process shadowban appeals surprisingly often for accounts without a long abuse history.
- Wait it out — replies typically take a few days to a couple of weeks. Posting from the account meanwhile doesn't help; everything stays invisible anyway.
- If denied, a fresh start beats evasion: new account, new behavior, proper warm-up — not a clone of the old account doing the old things.
How to Avoid Getting Shadowbanned
- Keep promotional links a small fraction of your overall activity — comment and participate genuinely.
- Warm up new accounts for 2–4 weeks before anything promotional.
- Vary your content between subreddits instead of blasting identical posts.
- If you buy engagement, buy quality: aged accounts, drip-fed delivery. Cheap instant votes from bot farms are the #1 way promoted posts get their authors flagged.
- Monitor your accounts so you catch a shadowban in hours, not weeks — invisible posting is wasted work.
Why Account Health Matters for Marketers
Reddit weighs every account's history — age, karma, and its internal Contributor Quality Score (CQS) — when deciding how visible that account's content is and whether AutoModerator filters it. A shadowban is just the extreme end of a spectrum your account is always on. If Reddit is part of your marketing channel, checking account health should be as routine as checking your email deliverability.
That's exactly what the full version of this tool does inside the UpvoteGG panel: bulk-check up to 100 accounts at once, see karma and activity signals, and put accounts on automatic monitoring so you get alerted the moment one gets shadowbanned — instead of finding out weeks later.
How Does the Reddit Shadowban Checker Work?
We query Reddit's public API the same way a logged-out visitor sees a profile. A healthy account returns its profile, a shadowbanned one returns a 404 despite existing, and a suspended one is explicitly labeled. The check takes a few seconds and works for any public username.
